Income diversification in rwanda

Discover more about our Heifer Program and heard directly from one of our lead farmers, Sylvain Harindintwali, about the benefits of cow manure as a fertilizer for coffee trees.

The result areas of this project are as follows:

Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) Training

The Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) training consists of farming practices modules (planting seedlings, mulching, weeding, pruning, pest management), cow husbandry modules, and farm financial management (business planning, bookkeeping, profitability analysis) to encourage healthy farms.

Heifer Distribution (Farmers Prosperity)

The heifer fosters income diversification. Additionally, the heifer program supports coffee-producing families who consume the milk produced by the cow (76% of the production quantity) as a reliable protein for the farmers and their families. The surplus is sold in the local markets.

Income Diversification

The heifer distribution program in combination with the Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) training in Rwanda focuses on income increase and  diversification. It decreases the costs of external farming inputs such as fertilizers. This additional source of income plays a significant role in minimizing coffee farming income fluctuation.
